THE WAY WE BREAK – Excerpt
Houston tilts his head back, his eyebrows screwed up as his gaze travels over my face, as if he’s just seeing me for the first time. “Rory, have you ever… are you a virgin?”
“Shit,” I whisper, and he responds with a soft chuckle. “Go ahead, laugh. I know it’s stupid.”
“I’m not laughing at that. I’m laughing at your reaction.” He holds on tighter when I try to push his hands off my face. “There’s nothing wrong with being a virgin. That’s a good thing. It means you value yourself and…”
He smiles softly and my stomach flips. “And you also value the person you’ve been waiting for.”
I close my eyes so he can’t see how scared I am. I’m not just scared of having sex for the first time. I’m scared of having sex with Houston. I’m terrified it won’t be good… for him.
He presses his lips to my forehead and I open my eyes. “You’ve been waiting for me?”
I draw in a deep breath and let it out in a soft whoosh as my gaze falls to his chest. “Yes.”
He tilts my face up again so he can look me in the eye. “Don’t turn away from me.” The look in his eyes is something I’ve never seen, a heady mixture of need and power. “Don’t you see what’s happening here?”
I shake my head. “What do you mean?”
His gaze falls to my lips and there’s a glint in his eye when I wet them with my tongue. “This is our destiny, Rory.” He brushes his lips over my cheekbone then lays a soft kiss on my temple. “You and I were waiting for each other. We were waiting for this moment.”
“But… Hallie,” I breathe. It’s the only words I can manage with him this close to me, my body pulsating with my need for him.
His lips travel back to my ear and he whispers, “Hallie wanted us together.” He nips my earlobe then drags his teeth over the sensitive flesh. “You know it and so do I.” He pulls away and his eyes take me in again, his gaze wandering over my hair, my face, my neck, my chest. “You’re so god damn beautiful.”
“No, I’m not.”
He looks genuinely confused by this automatic reaction. “Are you fucking kidding me?” He gently brushes his calloused thumb over my cheekbone. “Look at this skin… so creamy and perfectly soft.” He reaches up and I get a chill when he runs his fingers through my hair then rubs a lock between his fingertips. “Your hair is like silk and the most gorgeous color I’ve ever seen. Like scarlet ribbons.”
I can hardly breathe just listening to these words coming out of his mouth.
He grabs my chin roughly. “And this face.” He pauses as he looks me over. “Beyond beautiful. There’s no word in the English language to describe your beauty.”
“Stop,” I whisper, making a half-hearted attempt to push his hand off my chin.
“No. I will never stop telling you this until you believe it. You have to believe it.” He cups my face in his hands again to force me to look him in the eye. “You’re not just physically beautiful, Rory. You’re radiant. Inside and out. You’re vulnerable and smart and sexy as fuck and…”
His chest is heaving as his eyes lock on mine. Then he crushes his lips to mine and reality quickly dissolves. All I can feel is his rough hands on my face, his soft lips covering my mouth, his hot tongue brushing against mine. Holy shit. This is what it’s like to kiss Houston? Everything fading out of existence except us, and the electric friction of our bodies touching, our mouths hungrily seeking each other. His hand is tangled in my hair as he grabs the back of my neck, commanding me to stay put. But he must know that there’s nowhere I’d rather be.
He pulls away slightly as he sucks on my lip and I moan. Then his tongue is back in my mouth, teasing me with a sensual dance of slow and fast, deep and short, back and forth… If this is what it’s like to kiss him, then what would it be like to fuck him?
