Five years ago, April 5th

My head twitches to the left, but it takes me a moment to realize what’s happening. There’s something on my face. I let out a piercing shriek as I try to bat away whatever spider or fly is perched on my eyebrow. Then I hear soft chuckles.

I open my eyes and Houston begins roaring with laughter. “Was that you?”

“Sorry. I was just brushing your eyebrow to wake you up,” he explains, trying to keep a straight face.

“You jerk. What time is it?”

“It’s 6:30.” He holds his arms out and beckons me to come closer. “Come here. You don’t have to get ready for class for another hour.”

I scoot in next to him and drape my arm across his solid chest. “Is it really 6:30?”

“Yep. Are you still tired?”

“I haven’t slept that well in… months.” I trace my finger down the center of his chest and marvel as goosebumps sprout over his skin.

“I’m glad you slept.”

“I’m sorry about the things I said yesterday. I didn’t mean it.”

He kisses the top of my head. “No need to apologize… Sometimes… Sometimes I get angry with her, too.”

“She doesn’t deserve that.”

“No, she doesn’t.”

I trace a heart shape over his firm abs and smile when I see his erection rising beneath the sheet. I lightly rake my fingers over his ribs then back up to his chest. Then I trace the letters of the tattoo that stretches from one side of his chest to the other: LOYALTY. His only other tattoo is on the inside of his left forearm: Remember. Followed by the date Hallie died. He got both tattoos within the last six months.

Though he almost always avoids talking about Hallie, I know he hasn’t forgotten her. And I know he’s dealing with this in his own way. I shouldn’t have accused him of avoiding the issue. But I do hope he’ll open up to me at some point. I don’t know if it’s realistic to hope for something like that.

“Remember that time Hallie got an iPod for Christmas.”

He lets out a soft puff of laughter. “Yeah, and she gave it to your grandma.”

“I didn’t even notice until my grandma left the day after Christmas and she was wearing headphones when I went to hug her goodbye.”

“She was always way too mature for her age.”

“My grandma?”

He laughs again, squeezing my shoulder as he plants a kiss on my forehead. “Remember when we used to go to the public pool and I had to discipline that fucking eight-year-old kid for staring at her.”

“She was thirteen and too pretty for her own good, but she loved the attention. I, on the other hand, hated the pool. All I wanted to do while I was there was watch you, but you never paid me any attention. No matter what bikini I wore.”

“Maybe that was the problem. I would have noticed you if you weren’t wearing a bikini.”

I shake my head as I slide my hand under the sheet and wrap my fingers around his erection. A grin spreads across my face. I finally got all I ever wished for during those summers at the pool. But my smile quickly disappears when I realize it was at the expense of my best friend’s life.

I slide my fist down the length of his erection and his breathing quickens, but he reaches down and pulls my hand up.

He lifts my chin so I’m looking up at him. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For never noticing you. If I had known… maybe everything would have turned out differently.”

“Different isn’t always better.”

GIVEAWAY QUESTION: What do you think happened to Hallie?

synopsis

The Way We Fall

Maybe we shouldn’t have fallen so fast and so willingly.

Maybe we shouldn’t have moved in together before we went on our first date.

Maybe we should have given our wounds time to heal before we tore each other to shreds.

Maybe we should have never been together.

Houston has kept a devastating secret from Rory since the day he took her in. But the tragic circumstances that brought them together left wounds too deep to heal.

Five years after the breakup, Houston and Rory are thrust together by forces beyond their control. And all the resentments and passion return with more intensity than ever.

Once again, Houston is left with a choice between the truth and the only girl he’s ever loved.

From New York Times bestselling author Cassia Leo comes a passionate love story that pushes the boundaries of loyalty.
